[a/n: implied one-sided!kuroo testurou x reader x trash!oikawa tooru & set a few years in the future. also very angsty!!]

How long had he been waiting for you? Waiting for you to finally turn around and see him, and not that idiot you were always oh-so-desperately chasing after. Kuroo had seen that idiotic brunette make you cry over and over again, too many times to count. Yet, you didn't stop going back into his embrace. And, still, Kuroo could never bring himself to tell you to leave him.

Because even though that man you claimed to "love" made you cry countless times, he was also there to bring you happiness.

Kuroo couldn't bring himself to get in the middle of that.

It was one of those solemn days of the month when that trashy excuse for a manotherwise known as Oikawamade you cry once again. And, as always, you ran to Kuroo for an ear and some advice from a best friend. Sometimes, Kuroo wished he could tell you the truth. He wished he could tell you that you were making the biggest mistake of your life if you stayed with that guy. He wanted to tell you that there was someone better for you, because there really was: Kuroo, himself.

It was a warm winter afternoon, and you were sitting across the table, still sporting your light winter coat. Your eyes were puffy and red, most likely caused from the non-stop crying the night before. There was the usual medium-sized hot Mocha Latté in your trembling hands, and a small slice of chocolate cake in front of you, although remaining untouched. Kuroo looked at you with saddened black hues, ones that you refused to look into because you knew of the pity they withheld.

So, in the silence of the almost-empty coffee shop, Kuroo watched you absentmindedly fiddle with the diamond-studded, silver band on your ring finger. It couldn't be, he thought to himself, staring right at it with widened eyes. When you suddenly noticed his gaze, you self-consciously covered it with your other hand, a light shade of red dusting your soft cheeks.

"Testu--"

"You're engaged?" he asked, his deep voice lacing with disbelief, yet it remained soft.

You finally looked up at him, and nodded. "He proposed last night, but today, we got...into...another argument..."

He listened to the way your voice nearly trembled when you said those last two words. The way those words left your plump, parted lips every time you met up with him. Honestly, he was getting tired of it. He was getting tired of watching you get hurt again and again. He didn't even want to ask for the petty reason behind your tears and those stupid arguments you had with your new fiancé.

Kuroo watched you bite your bottom lip, a habit you kept ever since high school, whenever you were hesitant. Your gaze traveled back down to the drink in your hands, and you lifted the cup to your mouth, taking a sip of the beverage that had gone a bit lukewarm and gently setting it back down.

"Should I even ask what happened?" he spoke up after a moment of studying your face.

You let out a soft sigh. "It was my fault this time."

There you go again, taking the blame for the argument. How many times was it already?

"Wait, [Name]."

Your eyes trailed up to his face. "W-What?"

"I don't even want to know what happened," he said, with a bit of attitude. "You guys argue over the dumbest things. Just make up already, dummy."

How stupid of me.

You nodded, parting you lips to say something, but Kuroo interrupted you once again.

"If it really was your fault, then just apologize," he announced.

I'm so, so stupid.

He shot you his infamous smirk, the smirk that covered all the pain he was feeling. His heart was aching. As a best friend, it was supposed to be his job to help you piece your relationship back together and make you happy. Wasn't he doing it right? If he was, then why was his heart hurting so much? Why did his heart feel like it was shattering into a million pieces? Why did it feel like he should have said something else?

"B-B-But...! He said he didn't want to see me anymore!" you cried, your voice wavering and tears prickling at the corner of your eyes.

Kuroo let out a strained laugh. "Well, then you better tell him how much you love him and why."

His onyx eyes watched as your face blew up into a darker shade of crimson. "T-That's so embarrassing, Testurou!"

"That's the only way you're ever gonna get that guy to listen."

"I...I..."

The man reached out to touch the back of your hand and feigned a smile. "If you love him, go get him."

Then, as if on cue, your knight in shining armor burst through the door in just a plain white tee, ripped blue jeans and poorly tied sneakers, calling out your name hoarsely. His nose was red from the weather, tears had made it to the corner of his eyes. But, his tousled brunette hair and the visible bags under his brown hues were the little things that told Kuroo everything he needed to know. It told him that he would never get the chance to make you smile, or make you truly happy.

It told him that the one you loved most was that disheveled man, Oikawa Tooru.

"[N-Name]! I-I'm so sorry!" Oikawa cried out in relief as he ran to you, his arms enveloping you in a tight embrace.

"T-T-Tooru! We're in public!"

"I don't care! I love you so much! I didn't mean to make you cry, or make you run off! I'm so sorry, so please, please forgive me!"

Kuroo saw the tears drip down your face. But, this time, he knew that they were tears of joy.

"I really thought you were angry at me!"

Oikawa grinned down at you and planted a kiss to your forehead. "I could never stay mad at you, my love."

Watching this scene unfold was unexpectedly fulfilling, yet heart-wrenching. Kuroo couldn't bear to watch another man hold the one he loved, yet he was content with the way your eyes lit up when you looked at Oikawa. It hurt to know that you would only ever look at that man with so much love and adoration. He couldn't deny that he was envious. But, you—his best friend—were happy, and that made him happy.

Kuroo couldn't interfere, so all he could do was stand to the side and watch.

All he could do was wait for you to finally see him one day.

And, he realized half a year later that his day would never come.
